Deck Staining Services in Pittsburgh

If you have a deck on your house, it's probably one of your favorite places to spend time with friends and family on nice summer nights. You work hard to beautify your backyard and make your outdoor space a great place to relax and enjoy life. Having a well-kept, good looking finish on your deck is an essential part of having that great outdoor experience.

It is also especially important to understand what happens to bare wood over time when it is left exposed to sun and moisture. In general, deck staining needs done every 2-4 years depending on a multitude of conditional factors. You have spent a lot of money to have that wonderful deck on your house. If you do not keep it protected, you will without question experience splintering, warping, cupping, and cracking. The surface of your wood will soften, and it will not hold stain for as long as it once did…. ending in the need to re-stain far more frequently and eventually with the need for an extremely expensive rebuild or replacement.

ImageWorks has stained over 1,800 decks in the Western PA area. You can trust us to deliver the best quality, best looking deck staining (that's done to achieve the greatest service life possible) for your money.

Our Deck Staining Process

A long-lasting finish is mostly about preparation. Here's how our crews approach every deck staining project in the Pittsburgh area:

  • Inspection & estimate. We walk the deck, assess the wood and condition of the existing finish, and give you a clear, itemized estimate.

  • Deck cleaning & power washing. We clean and power wash the surface to remove dirt, mildew, and flaking old stains so the new stain bonds properly.

  • Sanding & surface prep. We sand rough and splintered areas and prep the wood for an even, smooth result.

  • Stain & seal. We apply a premium deck stain and sealer chosen for your wood and exposure, protecting against Western PA's sun, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles.

Staining Older & Weathered Decks

A gray, sun-faded deck usually just needs a fresh stain. Our deep cleaning, sanding, and stain-and-seal process brings tired, weathered Allegheny County decks back to life. Customers regularly tell us their 20- and 30-year-old decks look great again afterward.

Staying on a simple re-staining schedule (roughly every 2–4 years) keeps the wood protected and makes each future deck staining faster and easier. For more on timing and care, see our guides on deck refinishing and restoring vs replacing a wood deck.

Deck Staining FAQs

Should I paint or stain my deck
Wood decks are typically finished with either a semi-transparent stain, semi-translucent stain, or solid color stain. People often confuse solid color stain with paint, as both fully cover the wood's natural color. However, stain penetrates the wood more deeply than paint and, especially with the first few coats, still allows the texture of the wood grain to show through.
Can old decking be restored?
Yes, as long as the structural framing is still sound. Restoration involves cleaning, repairing or replacing damaged boards, and applying a fresh finish. If there's widespread rot in the framing, replacement is the better call.
How often should a wood deck be stained?
Most deck stains should be reapplied every 2–5 years depending on the product, sun exposure, foot traffic, and local climate. In Pittsburgh, the combination of harsh winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and humid summers tends to push decks toward the shorter end of that range. If water soaks in instead of beading up on the surface, it's time to restain.
What type of stain do you use on decks?
We choose the stain based on your wood and how much grain you want to show, from semi-transparent to solid-color stains. All formulated to protect against Western PA weather. We’ll recommend the right option during your free estimate.

We've stained over 1,800 decks, hold an A+ BBB rating, and are a multi-time Angie's List Super Service Award winner. We handle the full staining job including cleaning, sanding, staining, and sealing on older and weathered decks.
Can a weathered deck be stained without sanding?
Lightly weathered decks can often be cleaned and stained without full sanding. Severely weathered wood with deep graying usually needs sanding or a wood brightener to open up the grain and ensure proper stain penetration. Skipping prep is the most common reason deck stain fails early.
Do you clean and prep the deck before staining?
Yes. Every project includes cleaning and power washing and sanding before any stain goes down. Prep is what makes the finish last.
How long does a wood deck last?
A well-maintained wood deck typically lasts 10–15 years, though some hardwood decks can reach 20 years or more. Pressure-treated pine averages 10–15 years. Cedar and redwood can reach 15–20. Composite decking generally lasts 25–30 years. Regular cleaning and resealing every 2–3 years is the single most effective way to extend your deck's life.
How to remove stain from deck
Deck stain can be stripped, however it is an extremely labor intensive process that uses caustic chemical strippers. Decks should only be stripped when absolutely necessary. Some people, including some contractors, will try to strip a deck using high pressure power-washing, but this is extremely hard on the wood and will shorten the life of the wood.
Can you stain an old, weathered deck?
In most cases, yes. Cleaning, sanding, and a fresh stain-and-seal can bring a gray, weathered deck back to life and protect the wood for years.
How often should you stain a deck in Western PA?
Most decks in the Pittsburgh area need re-staining every 2–4 years. Sun exposure, moisture, and our freeze-thaw winters all shorten the life of a finish, so south- and west-facing decks often need attention sooner.
